Tyson at ITSC
The highlight of NECC for me was the closing keynote Dr. Tim Tyson from Mabry Middle School. ABSOLUTELY inspirational! So much so that besides watching all the videos his students created, I emailed him and asked if he might indeed be interested in coming to Oregon for ITSC. Yippee, he will be joining us and I can afford him.

Presenting at NECC
I arrived half hour early for my Cool Tools workshop at the Georgia World Conference Center. Standing outside was a friend, holding up his phone taking picture of a very large group. He proceeded to tell me this group was waiting to get into my workshop. Sure enough when the previous session let out a rush of participants tried to squeeze in, only to be told they had to have a seat or they could not attend the session (no sitting on the floor), only room for about 70.
This was a BYOL session, something new NECC was trying. What a concept, hands on eh? The internet was spotty, but the session went well.
Interestingly enough, apparently my friend, trying to appease the hundreds of people standing outside who were frustrated, led his own cool tools session in the lobby using my website and handouts... good for him.

Cool Tools at NCCE
Wow! IT has been back to back presenting, three weeks in a row. I did a session at NCCE on Cool Tools. I had about 80 people in a huge room. I don't like doing sessions that are not hands on, it is tough for me, I want people to have practice... but it seemed to go over well. I had them up and moving and dialogging along with showcasing some web 2.0 tools. | ![]() I did a search recently in Flickr for NCEE and found this picture someone took of me. |
![]() | Diane Woodard was given the Outstanding Educator award at NCCE. That was great, she totally deserves it. |

Google at ASTE
I am presenting a pre-con workshop and some sessions at ASTE in Alaska. I am over preparing based on what happened at ITSC with the internet going down. Lynn Lary has allowed me to work with her handouts for my workshop besides my webpage. Can you believe it? Jennifer is providing handouts, geez!
The workshops went well. I also hid some geocaches for a contest they are having. The conference itself, the attendance seems to continue to dwindle. I wonder if it is worth the expense to come up here? I guess if we want to reach Alaska, this is one way.

Classrooms of Distinction
I was encouraged to attend Classrooms of Distinction, right before ITSC. It looked cool, my favorite session was the math session. Besides the internet at the convention center being HORRIBLE, I was disappointed... if you removed all the technology the classrooms would have looked the same as a paper pencil worksheet classroom, no interaction, same old strategies. Maybe my thinking has to evolve here but why spend the money if we are going to do it the same ole way? Besides the math session the presenters where not that engaging, but yes we know I have high standards...NEXT...

Exhibit at AWSP
I went and exhibited at the Association of School Principals in Spokane, Washington. My flight was cancelled so I ended up arriving late, but was still able to exhibit one day.
I made two great connections. One was the vendor Achieve3000 who said they would sponsor a dinner at the Oregon Cadre if we let them present for one hour. The second was like EdGate, there name escapes me, but I was wondering if this would be a solution to the ODE REAL project and adding content.

COSA Seaside
I presented on "To Block or Not To Block" at COSA Seaside. The one hour session was about whether we should be blocking access to websites such as MySpace, blogs and such or teaching kids how to navigate around these environments. There were only about 14 people in the session on a sunny Thursday [cough] golfing afternoon.
In addition I helped with the REAL session presented by Drew Hinds.
