Pendleton Qwest Grant
Sunridge teacher wins grant
By Flynn Espe
The East Oregonian
During a Friday assembly, Sunridge Middle School teacher Heidi Paullus was surprised with a giant check in the amount of $7,560 - representing a technology grant from Qwest Communications.
With the grant money, the entire sixth-grade class will be able to use portable global positioning units for a mapping project of the Buck Creek cabins area in the Umatilla National Forest.
"They'll be using the GPS to mark trails and to basically map the area," Paullus said, adding students also will use digital cameras to document the plant life of the area.
Paullus is one of five Oregon teachers and the only teacher in Eastern Oregon to win the grant, according to Qwest representative Bob Gravely.
"We were looking for teachers who were presenting an idea to use the technology in an innovative way, to help kids learn," Gravely said, who has been busy surprising teachers with the good news. "It's more fun this way."
Principal Jon Peterson playfully taunted the students before explaining the reason for the assembly.
"I had no idea what the assembly was about," Paullus said. "I thought the kids were in trouble for something."
This is Paullus's first year teaching for the Pendleton School District. She previously taught in Hermiston where she said she similarly tried to use technology in teaching.
Details of the project have yet to be worked out, but students will be prepped on the equipment before their trip to the Umatilla National Forest site.

Springfield Qwest Grant
KEZI Morning News
ABC Eugene 11/07/2007 5:30 AM - 6:00 AM Impressions:
A couple of Springfield teachers are bringing pod- casting to their classrooms - all because of a grant from Qwest. Kim Hernandez, a teacher at Centennial Elementary School found out in front of her class, that the 3000-plus dollar grant was given to her. She'll use the money to set up a project where kids visit the virtual world, write reports, and put together "pod-casts." It's incredible. My class is truly the beneficiary of this grant. I'm excited for technology. Have iPods to interview the community with, camera's to catch pictures, mics to catch sound to learn for today's society. Thurston High School will also benefit. The grant there is just more than 7500 dollars. These two teachers were among five statewide who won the money.

Grants
Darren and I have been collaborating on the roll out of the Qwest Teacher Grants
and the Oregon EdTech Regional Cadre Mini-Grants.
Applications are due Monday, the 22nd and have already started arriving. The biggest concern I have is not enough money to fund such great projects. I cannot tell you how many incredible regional cadre stories have been coming in via email. What a wonderful success!!

Qwest
Today I met with Judy Peppler (Qwest), Ginny Lang(Qwest), Steve Nelson (OVSD), and Carla Wade to talk about Qwest Foundation Grant. In the past ODE has received Qwest monies and we have decided to run Qwest Teadcher grants through OETC. Originally I think Carla and I were wanting the foundation monies for the Oregon Cadre to fund regional mini grants. Qwest really felt strongly about the grants being for individual teachers. Thus Carla and I designed a plan that will align. We will award grants to teachers who are involved in a regional cadre. This will make a nice tie from the Oregon Cadre
