ODE, NClack, Tabula... oh my..
I worked on some productive projects this week:
- ODE pulled together an advisory group for the Essential Skills the state board wants students to know and be able to do when they graduate. I was brought in as a rep for business and education and technology. It was a thoughtful difficult meeting, and was glad to be invited and speak about the 21st Century Skills that I think are essential for students to know when they graduate.
- I met with Amy Petti from North Clackamas to walk her through setting up a district moodle hosted at Eduhost, and to talk about having OETC do some consulting and training around the tool.
- Tabula Digita is an amazing company that has designed an online game environment, DimensionM, for middle school algebra. It was very stimulating and they are finding excellent results in students understanding and testing levels after using this gaming approach to algebra. ODE and Intel may be willing to match funds this year in using Tabula, which also has a competition component that has students competing. I will have a student competition at ITSC. I am hoping to show this to the cadre as one of the aspects of preparing our kids for the 21st Century.
- ODE released the RFP for the Oregon Virtual School Professional Development Instructor. I have two weeks to complete the RFP.
- I posted a job opportunity for an Instructional Programs Coordinator for OETC today. This would be based primarily on receving the RFP from ODE, but the timing is essential to get someone in to help Instructional Programs roll out. I am looking forward to an excellent candidate.
- Planning for both Montana and Oregon Cadre and logistics as well as the leadership meeting for Oregon.

Catching Up
Welcome back from vacation! I am working with Tim Tyson to do a keynote at ITSC. Also trying to get Marco Torres to respond to me to do the other keynote and workshops.
I have been reviewing the grant reports for payments.
We were awarded another $50,000 from Qwest to offer the teacher grants for this upcoming year.
Spoke with Steve Nelson about the status of the OVSD Staff Development Project. He will have to do a bid, so I will be applying to the RFP in August. So if I were to hire someone it may not be until October or later.
Also met with Janet Rush from Intel to review a science curriculum they are thrilled about.
Hanging over my head to work on is:
- Board Retreat Report
- IP Plan for the Future
- Curriculum for the Montana Cadre
- Potential of a principals cadre

Glance
Two more SMART Trainings.
NWRESD hosted a moodle training and round table discussion. I went to see the training provided by Paul Nelson. My ah-ha moment came when a teacher asked Paul to help him, he had uploaded this word document to the moodle five times and it never shows up. Paul calmly shows him the yellow text at the top of the Explorer browser that says pop ups are blocked, do you want to allow? This little feature that was hard to see became a time consuming road block for this teacher. That opened my eyes once again, that is where many teachers are and it becomes time consuming.

More REALly
The REAL project has been so much work. Much more than I thought. We met our deliverable a month early after a lot of tech difficulties and meetings. I had a phone meeting today to review what we have accomplished to date.
Another highlight... I was asked to sit on the IT Task Force Committee for ODE. Our goal is taking the new requirements from the feds about showing technology proficiency, and creating a plan of what that would look like for Oregon. A lot of smart people on this committee the conversations have been valuable.
Lastly, I was asked by COSA to present at the OASE/OACOA Winter Conference. I presented on web 2.0 tools, but incorporated Carla Wade and the ODE information, REAL to meet my deliverable and OVSD had a component. As always I was disappointed when I saw one of the keynotes who had EXCELLENT content displayed from an overhead projector hundreds of feet a way from where I sat, luckily I was given a fifty page handout to follow along... Yea you fill in the blanks.

A Little of This...a little of that
This weeks highlights:
- OETC Staff Rafting. We went rafting for our bonding activity. It rained... of all days filled with sun we had the rainy day. IT was so cold but great fun!
- ITSC planning meeting with Kim.
- OETC staff planning retreat. Worked with staff to align the board goals with OETC goals and the layout for Ops, IT, Communications and IP.
- UMESD Round table. Was asked to sit in on a planning meeting that UMESD was having on the directions they should move in technology. It was a great conversation.

Highlights
This week the predominate projects that stand out are:
- Met with EdGate and Drew Hinds to explore the possibility of REAL using EdGate resources rather than designing our own or searching for lessons to match standards. EdGate has a great resource, but ODE felt they could not sustain the cost per student model for the state.
- Worked on preparing for the REAL contractors training in August.
- Met with Colin Cameron of COSA to see if there was any possible projects we could partner. Other ideas were to help with the conferences they do to provide technology integration. Since Colin is new, he said he would get a feel for the job and let me know if there was any possible partnership projects.>/li>

OAESDs and OVSD
I met with Leslie Golden who is the Education Enterprise Partnership between ODE and the ESD Superintendents... at least that is the goal. We talked about various areas that we could network together. She also invited Steve Nelson who runs the Oregon Virtual Schools Project and I pitched the idea of running the professional development for the OVSD.
