Oregon EdTech Cadre Affirmations
"Thanks for leading the EdTech Cadre this year. You're doing a great job! It has been the best professional development I've received in 20 years as an educator. My family and I played 'watch' doin' at the table this morning. It was a great way to start the day!" ~Alex Allen, Harrisburg School District
"I didn’t get to thank you directly for allowing me to participate in the Cadre meeting last week. As I said to the whole group, it was a wonderful and invigorating experience. You clearly are a master of effective professional development structures and strategies, seeing the focus on NETS was gratifying to my ISTE eyes, and the people you’ve assembled are a wonderful group of professionals. I enjoyed participating and seeing some of the talent in Oregon." ~Leslie Conery, ISTE Deputy CEO
"You are doing a great job and I think Oregon is on the right track. We have so many smart and creative people here we need to tap into their knowledge as much as possible." ~Skip Offenhauser, Instructional Technologies Coordinator, Redmond School District

Wrap Up
This week I spent time wrapping up the Montana and Oregon Cadre Fall Trainings by sending out the evaluation, thank you cards and letters to the participants bosses telling them of the incredible opportunity the have provided for. I have received numerous emails of appreciation on how this was not only the best cadre ever, but how it has changed thinking and trainings happening around the state. here is just one inspiring email.
Will Greenleaf, Canby School District. I really enjoyed the conference.
In fact, I have started a new approach in my teaching. I'm referring to it to my colleagues as a shift in my pedagogical paradigm in approaching technology.
The last two days I have spoken to every one of my classes about switching from teaching specific skill sets and focusing on developing an atmosphere of creativity, collaboration, and learning how to learn new technologies. That the students consider their message, consider their audience, reflect on what is the best medium to convey that message, and then learn the tools that will make it happen.
I have used the example of cell phones and text messages. They were given tolls and had the desire to send a message. They figured out how to use the technology on their own.
I have also been speaking about the Renaissance and that I believe we are at the cross roads of a new Renaissance. The question then becomes, what would Leonardo DaVinci be asking, attempting, discovering with the tools that surround us today?
The biggest inspiration came from the video "The Machine is Us" which I have been showing tit to all of my kiddos.
Thank you for your work and the invitation which brought me to that conference.

Cadre's
I am sure it is not true, but my head thinks right now that I have never been so stressed out and busy. It seems worse than ITSC, but I think I am deceived. Planning for Oregon and Montana cadre's has consumed me this week, and that is all I can say.
Oh, we have 90 participants for Oregon and 25 for Montana and we charged $150 membership fee this year.

PulseMedia
AMAZING! This week I met with Ioanida Costache, a senior at Milwaukie High School. She is the CEO of PulseMedia the group that does digital video not only for a class but for businesses. I hired this group to film the Oregon Cadre for the year and to film all of ITSC.
Jeff Linman, their teacher said, "I didn't know anything about video cameras and making movies five years ago when I started this group and I still don't know that much. I don't have to. It is about authentic learning opportunities for students." Now if that isn't 21st Century Learning I don't know what is. He emailed me after the meeting saying how cool this project is for the students and how I gave them curriculum for a year.
In addition to the conversation, it became apparent that Jeff and the students need to tell their story. So we decided to have them come to the Essential Skills Task Force meeting at ODE in October. As the task force has widdled down the essential skills for students to know and be able to do when they graduate, they have eliminate Creativity and Innovation, which are building blocks for America to be culturally competitive in the future. I think Jeff's students can help show how important that skill is.

Oregon Cadre Leadership Team
I was reminded this week that my best asset is not facilitating small planning groups. I will admit it now. I met with the leaders for the Oregon Cadre this week. The meeting was wonderful, and they are an INCREDIBLE group of educators that I am proud to work with. I on the other hand did not get my desired outcome, which would have been the full Oregon Cadre agenda planned.
What I did get was a brain stretching and challenging discussion on what the goal of the cadre is. The predominate message being, sure teach the emerging technologies, but don't forget the Jane Doe of Tiny School District. Teach them at their level. I do not disagree with that concept. It took me days after the meeting in which I was stressed out, to assimilate what that means for me personally and for the Oregon Cadre. How do we push educators toward's the necessary change to help students be ready for the 21st Century. We cannot afford to be thinking 20th Century roadblocks and thoughts.
It was the next week that I heard Aaron introduce OETC Instructional Programs by saying, "We deliver professional development on cutting edge technologies." Shortly after that I received an instant message saying the motto of the cadre should be "We're not afraid to be beta." This really encapsulated and help give me focus about the cadre. I only wish I would have had that focus sooner to facilitate the leadership team more effectively.

Learning and Innovation Skills
Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century and those who are not. They include:
- Creativity and Innovation
- Critical thinking and Problem Solving
- Communication and Collaboration
These are the focus of the Oregon and Montana cadre for 2007-08.

Back to Back
![]() | It is tough to go back to back with cadre's but off to Eugene I went for our Oregon Cadre. It too was a great success EXCEPT for the Community Walk crash... yup we crashed their server, even though I had email communique' in advance to help prevent it. Community Walk apologized, but we worked through it, people were flexible. The group did excellent hard work. My favorite was our closing activity to review the 13 Principles we have worked on all year, there was song, poetry and lots of laughter. One of those teachable moments. Truly the best meeting yet. The Cadre's Mighty Reach
"I heard the voice of a student who has selective mutisum. I have worked with this student since she came here as a kindergartner. She has come to computer lab once a week for the past five years and never said a word in class. I was brought to tears by something she achieved with technology as a tool. We have been working on producing a spring haiku photostory. Students have written a poem, found photographs to illustrate it, added music, and narrated it. Today SHE wanted to narrate her poem. YES!!!!!! Is technology a tool that can unlock a door? Yes!"
~ Carol Proudfit (has attended ITSC and is a part of the Salem-Keizer EdTech Cadre.

Planning
The big highlight this week beyond ITSC (which consumes my days and nights) was the Oregon Cadre leadership team met to plan our February meeting (during ITSC). I think this went well and I was able to use some of the strategies I learned at NSDC like the cafe table discussions.
I tried out a new tool, a sketch pad to write on my computer. Didn't work well at all, I had to return it. I would like he ability to write on my slides when presenting... I will keep looking.
At NSDC the focus of music to set the stage for learning was HUGE. I took notes as to the songs that energized people. So I purchased a few songs to use in PD... tried them out with the leadership team, they LOVED it.
--We had our OETC Christmas luncheon at McCormick and Schmicks. In the white elephant gift exchange I got a decorative bottle that held vegetables for salsa.

Fall Oregon Meeting
WOW! What a blast. The Oregon Cadre had it's best meeting yet. Take a look at what the cadre is blogging about.
To consider in future planning:
- Down side, the break out rooms where small.
- The connectivity was not the best.
- The process for getting cadre members to be authors on the blog was cumbersome.
- Vendor supported meals. We had a complaint about a vendor schpeal that paid for dinner

Planning
This week was spent cementing and planning the last minute details for the Oregon Cadre next week, to include handouts for notebooks. Take a look at our agenda. We have ninety people registered. Hoping the connectivity is a go!

Oregon Leadership
Much of this week was spent on planning the Oregon Cadre Leadership meeting. The end of the week we hosted our leaders (who applied by application and letter of reference). I hosted the leadership planning meeting at Forest Grove Grand Lodge McMenamins. We bonded over frisbee golf.
We worked on the year long agenda. We had some tense moments of coming to consensus. Overall, I think we have a good plan and a fantastic team.

Ending July
Started the week off by cheating with Claire and John on the scavenger hunt. I thought that was quite fun.
Worked on REAL most of the week.
Carla Wade and I met for a day of planning the Oregon EdTech Cadre for 2007-08. We have added a leadership cadre which will help with the presentations and Carla and I planned their fall planning retreat.
