Professional Development
ENGAGED LEARNING, ACHIEVEMENT AND HUMOR CONFERENCE. I was able to attend this great conference in Chicago on how to incorporate humor into professional development. I learned a lot and enjoyed the opportunity.
Unfortunately I have been sick for two months and was not doing well at the conference. I have been diagnosed with mono, so am doing my best to heal as there is much to do.

Action Packed
This week has been intellectually stimulating and challenging. I spent two days at the ODE Summer Leadership Institute. Willard Daggett shared his message and the two highlights for me are that our public schools are museums. The other analogy was that public schools are the titanic and we keep rearranging the chairs. We are preparing kids for the 20th Century with memorization of facts, where in their generation facts are doubling every 72 days, no need to memorize, look it up. Therefore there are skills that they DO need.
Ken Kay from the Partnership for 21st Century Schools nicely summarized some initiatives and solutions. After researching what skills kids need to be 21st Century citizens, they have a list of standards and skills we SHOULD be teaching in our schools. I am so challenged by this concept, so will take one of the strands and weave it into the Oregon and Montana Cadre's this year.
I spent some time in Gresham doing a moodle training. It went well, although not enough time to adequately grasp the tool.
I was able to dialog with some of the Oregon Cadre Leaders at the Symposium, so today i am working on the leaders agenda. I also have been working with Kim on getting a location for the leaders meeting in September, along with opening up registration for both the Oregon and Montana Cadre.

SMART Training
Bob Freidler from Compview is providing half day SMART Training. I have coordinated the training and it is hosted in our conference room. We started with one day, and since our confernece room only holds 14 people tightly, we have had to offer four trainings. Bob provided lunch, but the training was free. I ran the registration system, name tags and all communications. Overall, I think it was a great success.

NSDC
WOW! What great, energizing and thoughtful staff development. I have not been to the National Staff Development Council's (NSDC) conference in five years, as at that time I was so disappointed at the lack of technology integration. This time there still was a lack of technology anywhere (it cost $1,000 for a wireless connection), but this time I looked past that to the strategies. I gained some new ideas I can use when I provide PD, and I know how to integrate the tech. In fact I think we have a niche here at OETC, especially with the cadre's. I think we should present at NSDC in the future.
Nonetheless, I have come back energized.

Mapleton Training
I traveled to Mapleton School District with Drew Hinds, ODE, to provide professional development around the REAL website. I actually did more training on FURL and helping a staff who just received their new laptops and projectors, to set them up and utilize the new equipment. Usually we would not provide this service without a fee, but it helped to meet one of the REAL deliverables on training.
As a side note, it was a great eye opener for me to be in a small district and see the road blocks and issues surrounding the teacher. Just turning on a computer and what to do about all the pop ups became a huge roadblock. When I taught Furl, we had twenty different issues with installing the browser plugin. Wow, a free tool like Furl took hours of staff development for non tech users. I hardly think about these concerns anymore and am aware I need to think about them.
